Epitome Therapeutics is an early-stage biotechnology company based in Vienna, focused on developing a next-generation epigenome editing platform to transform the way we understand and treat disease. As a spin-off of Europe’s leading life science institution EMBL, the company brings together bold ideas, cutting-edge technologies, and a collaborative team spirit.
We are seeking a driven and hands-on CRISPR Protein Engineer (full-time) to join our client's R&D team and contribute to the advancement of its next-generation epigenetic editing platform. This role combines scientific protein design with hands-on laboratory work and offers the opportunity to shape the company's protein engineering capabilities from an early stage. You will contribute across construct design, experimental validation, and iterative optimization while working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative therapeutic technologies.
CRISPR Protein Engineer (f/m/x)
Vienna, Austria
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Design and develop novel protein constructs for Epitome's CRISPR-based epigenetic editing platform
- Develop construct architectures, fusion proteins and linker strategies based on protein engineering principles and scientific rationale
- Translate scientific hypotheses into construct designs and experimental workflows while driving iterative Design–Build–Test–Learn cycles
- Perform hands-on laboratory work including construct design, cloning, protein expression and functional characterization
- Apply computational prediction tools and protein structure-function knowledge to guide engineering strategies and protein optimization
- Independently design, execute and interpret experiments, generating data to evaluate construct functionality and platform performance
- Validate engineered constructs using tissue culture and cell-based assays in close collaboration with the R&D team
- Present scientific results and contribute to technical discussions, project evaluations, and collaborations with internal and external stakeholders
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- PhD in bioengineering, structural biology, molecular biology, computational biology, epigenetics, or a related field
- Proven hands-on experience in protein engineering, enzyme engineering and / or CRISPR engineering, including protein optimization, fusion proteins, linker engineering and rational construct design
- Strong understanding of protein structure-function relationships, combined with experience in construct design, cloning, protein expression, and characterization
- Experience with tissue culture and cell-based assays for construct validation
- Experience using computational protein design and prediction tools to support construct development and engineering decisions; familiarity with programmable protein systems or CRISPR technologies is an advantage
- Basic coding skills for scientific data analysis; experience with higher-throughput screening, mammalian expression systems is a plus
- An active bench scientist who enjoys combining scientific design with hands-on laboratory work
- A curious, entrepreneurial team player with a proactive mindset, who enjoys taking ownership and thrives in a fast-paced startup environment
OUR CLIENT OFFERS
